The Return of the Hawaiian Shirt?

Hanging Loose
Aloha State style goes from kitsch to cutting edge
February 15, 2006—Turns out Thomas Magnum was onto something (and we’re not talking about the facial hair). His Hawaii stomping grounds—best known lately as honeymoon destination of choice for Japanese and Middle American newlyweds—have suddenly attained a level of cool not seen since the P.I.’s eighties heyday. Spring 2006 runways flowered with Aloha State allusions: Kean Etro cut blazers and button-downs, left, from bright floral patterns, while Dolce & Gabbana worked Hawaiian prints onto shorts and track jackets, and Rachel Comey overlaid the island landscape on a range of items, including shorts, ties, belts, and sportswear. If a tropical-print track jacket—or, for that matter, a floral-pattern suit—seems a bit flashy, there are subtler options. Tomas Maier’s smoke-colored cashmere sweater evokes the islands’ style with a massive (though relatively understated) “hang loose” logo, while a bucket hat from Paul Smith offers a slightly lower-key rendition of the iconic palm. Either way, though, you’ve got to supply your own Ferrari.”Cash Hawaii” sweater, $865, at Tomas Maier, Miami Beach, FL, (888) 373-0707; Bucket Hat, $85, at Paul Smith, http://www.paulsmith.co.uk
